The Lake Chapala area is fortunate to be a 45-minute drive from Guadalajara which has a reputation for having some of the best healthcare and doctors in Mexico. Guadalajara boasts three international medical schools, several private hospitals, as well as numerous medical centers, and clinics.

But without going to Guadalajara, the Lake Chapala area has several medical clinics. A new hospital just opened in 2019 in San Antonio and a new Ribera medical Center slated to open in 2020.  Most doctors and many of the medical staff are bilingual.

One thing that always surprises newcomers is that your doctor here will probably offer home visits. And pharmacies also offer delivery.

Dental services are also much less expensive here. So much so that dental tourism is quite common, with visitors planning short visits just to have dental work done.

Some of the medical clinics here accept insurances from out of the country. An option for others is to purchase expat health insurance, or to purchase a type of insurance which pays for you to be transported back to your home hospital once you are stabilized.

But whatever choices you make the health care options here are numerous and of excellent quality.
